High-density polyethylene (HDPE) resin is produced from the chemical compound ethylene. HDPE bottles are blow-molded and used for milk and other beverages, detergents, shampoos, motor oil, drugs and cosmetic products. Most milk and water bottles use a colorless HDPE resin. Bottles used for other products often have colorants added to the resin.

Injection-molded HPDE containers are used for products such as margarine and yogurt. More HDPE bottles are produced than containers. HDPE resin can also be used to make bottle and container caps and flexible packaging such as sacks and trash bags. HDPE is also used in many non-packaging products.

Bottles and containers comprise 54 percent of HDPE packaging products and 39 percent of all HDPE products. HDPE bottles and containers began displacing heavier metal, glass and paper packages in the 1970s. Although the amount of HDPE used in bottles and containers has tripled since 1980, its garbage market share is still less than 1 percent.

This profile only covers HDPE bottles and containers.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is the best plastic material for containing food, water, beverages, body products and chemicals.

Industry has recognized HDPE as the plastic container of choice to ensure purity of its contents. Plastic milk containers and the non-clear variety of water jugs are made of High Density Polyethylene. Opaque vitamin and medicinal products are contained in HDPE containers. Laundry detergent bottles and fuel tanks in automotive vehicles are also made of HDPE.

HDPE containers have become very popular among health conscious individuals who want to store their items in the best food grade plastic material possible. Refillable water bottles, food storage containers and body product bottles are some of the most requested items in our inventory.

HDPE plastic may be identified by its milky translucent or opaque white color. The number 2 in the middle of the triangle of arrows that make up the recycle logo can be found on the bottom of every HDPE container.

High Density Polyethylene has high tensile strength and high resistance to chemical solvents. It may withstand temperatures as low as -60 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

We sell HDPE plastic bottles and we offer many different shapes and sizes to fit all of your food, water, beverage and body product storage needs.

The objective of this document is to outline criteria to consider if a variant of the HDPE bottle or component of the HDPE bottle is being evaluated for recyclability in the existing HDPE (SPI resin identification code "2") bottle stream. A bottle component is defined as a bottle accessory such as:

Closures/Closure Liners
Label/Adhesives
Decoration
Sleeves/Seals
Attachments, or the bottle itself

Bottle color, multi-layers and coatings, chemical composition of the HDPE resin are also evaluated.

The question as to what variants of HDPE bottles can be considered as recyclable in the present post-consumer HDPE bottle stream is being asked with increased frequency. The growing popularity of HDPE as a packaging resin and its successful recycling history has led the packaging industry to develop new HDPE bottles to suit both technical and marketing needs. By and large, HDPE recyclers, acting independently from each other, have responded to these changes based on their specific recycling process and the requirements of their end products or their customers' end products.
